Five Tips for Working with a Personal Trainer

Working with a personal trainer is a great way to take your fitness routine to the next level. Studies show that people who train with an exercise specialist are more likely to meet their goals and successfully implement lasting lifestyle changes than those who don’t. That is why the Hancock Wellness Centers have personal trainers on staff to help each of our members on their individual fitness journey.

Maybe it’s hard to motivate yourself and having a coach by your side cheering you on is just what you need to thrive. Or maybe you are looking to mix things up and reach the next level of fitness. Or maybe you have just recovered from an injury or illness, and you need some help getting back in the game. No matter the reason, if you have decided to work with a personal trainer, here are some tips to help you along the way.

1. Trust your trainer’s expertise and get ready to sweat

The personal trainers available at the three Hancock Wellness Center locations are all certified exercise specialists. That means they have had to gain the knowledge necessary to help our members safely and effectively build and execute a fitness routine. In other words: you can trust them to help you no matter your level! Each person and each trainer are different, so finding the right one for you and building that trusting relationship is a key in your successful journey.

When you come to your training sessions with your new exercise buddy, be ready to work hard. Personal training is meant to push you in the ways you can’t motivate yourself. If you are looking to climb to a new level of fitness, you will have to do the work it takes to get there. The good news? Having a personal trainer on your team is like having your own personal cheerleader! And once you know how far you can go, you might even feel like there is no limit to your fitness potential.

2. Know what you want to achieve

Before you begin your personal training sessions, you will have an initial assessment. This may include strength tests, mobility screenings and even a health history. These stats will help both you and your trainer to know where you are starting from so you can see your progress. You will also lay out some goals with your trainer. For instance, do you want to lose weight? Or maybe you are hoping to be able to accomplish an athletic feat such as a marathon? All this information will allow your trainer to tailor your sessions so you can successfully meet your goals.

3. Get ready for big changes everywhere

Working with a trainer doesn’t mean your new fitness lifestyle stops at the gym. To meet your goals, you will need to assess your other habits and choices as well. You will need to take care of your body by stopping any bad habits, such as smoking or over imbibing. You may also add in new and healthier lifestyle choices such as eating well and drinking plenty of water every day so you can fuel your body and feel great!

4. Be on time and be ready

It is important to respect your personal trainer’s time by showing up on time or even earlier than your session. If you arrive early, take the opportunity to warm up your muscles so you are ready to go and can make the most of your time with your trainer.

5. Be honest about abilities, pain, and injuries

If you find that certain exercises are causing you pain or old injuries are being exacerbated, be honest with your trainer. They will be able to help you modify your workout so it can be beneficial to your body. They may also have great recommendations for treatments to help you overcome physical limitations.
