Certified Medical Fitness Center – What Does that Mean, Why It Matters

Certified Medical Fitness Center – What Does that Mean, Why It Matters

You may have heard that Hancock Health’s Hancock Wellness Center is the only certified medical fitness center in the region. Why is this important, and why should you choose a certified fitness medical center to help you reach your health and fitness goals?

What’s it all about?

Fitness centers can play an important role in participants’ overall health, and most people are lucky enough to have at least a few conveniently located close to home. A typical fitness center offers access to exercise equipment, classes and workout space.

A certified medical fitness center, on the other hand, offers the above resources with extensive medical oversight and an intentional focus on disease management, prevention and measurable results. To achieve certification, these centers must feature programming that works with all members, regardless of their health status, allowing them to minimize their risks of injury or illness and help achieve their goals of better health and wellness.

Take, for instance, the patient who had a total knee replacement last year. He attended his rehabilitation sessions faithfully and now wants to continue working on his overall health and fitness. But he also is diabetic and admits to sneaking sweet treats more often than he should. At a traditional fitness center, this patient could concentrate on the low-impact exercise machines that will continue to help strengthen his knee, but he’ll have to follow up with his doctor to determine how to manage his diabetes and cut down on the sweets. At a certified medical fitness center like Hancock Wellness Center, he will have access to Hancock Wellness Center clinical programs like our Diabetes Self-Management Training and our Journey to Wellness.

Who certifies medical fitness centers?

The Medical Fitness Association, based in North Carolina, conducts a thorough, in-depth review of the facility that is based on its Medical Fitness Standards and Guidelines for Medical Fitness Center Facilities publication. Hancock Wellness Center had to demonstrate its adherence to more than 200 standards and guidelines. Mandatory key factors include:

  • Active and regular medical oversight
  • Disease management and prevention programs
  • Testing and outcome tracking
  • Individualized health screening
  • A focus on improving community health
